I have not died, gone to heaven or hell, or otherwise left the premises.
I still paint, I still want people to examine my work.
There is more to come...

TWO LEGS UP: beyond infancy (IN PROGRESS)

16 X 20

Oil on canvas

Life is a ballet: Living beings take the stage to accomplish many things.

They pose, they move, they breathe.

They strut upon the stage performing a multitude of tasks. They are alive, involved with themselves and the acts which they perform. They are exquisite as they move about amid the grander scheme of things.

My painting is still young.

The work will be for sale.

THE ARCTIC: STEPHEN CARON, 1995

10 X 12

Oil on Canvas.

(A ship called "The Arctic")

I completed this painting 'on the spot' during an early morning excursion to East Montreal during the summer of 1995.

I shipped it to my mother in Florida.

Following her death, I recently sought to bring it home.

The frame was destroyed during a car crash (The painting was pried from the wreck of my car on May 26, 2010 near Tampa, Florida.)

I am thankful that the (stretched) canvas survived.

I have never copied the style of any artist before me; but as I renew my familiarity with this work, I am reminded of the paintings of J.M.W. TURNER, British forerunner of the French Impressionist movement.

The painting is for sale. $890

IN PROGRESS: LOUISA & EVA LEES

20 X 24

(Oil on canvas)

IN PROGRESS, this painting speaks of my heritage.

LIGHT shines upon those who mourn.

Louisa and Eva Lees tended the grave of my great grandparents in Telford, England. It was another time.

LIGHT is delivered through color and a few thoughtfully applied brushstrokes...

This painting will be for sale.

LOUISA LEES NEWMAN: 1898-1965

LOUISA LEES was born in SHROPSHIRE, England in 1898. She emigrated to Canada prior to the Second World War. Here, she met her (also British) husband-to-be, ALFRED CECIL NEWMAN.
LOUISA taught music in England. A HEINTZMAN upright piano stood prominently in her Montreal home. It produced delicate, crystal tones.
She loved the arts. LOUISA wrote poetry and spoke in exultant terms about painters who were able to capture the essence of beautiful things.
LOUISA and ALFRED produced three children.
The middle child was named CLARICE who, as a young woman, gave birth to a boy in 1952.
As the boy developed, LOUISA and CLARICE conspired to explore his artistic talent.
At a young age, he was provided with lessons in music (piano). LOUISA and CLARICE attended childhood recitals. CLARICE brought him to the McGill Conservatory to complete his childhood pianistic examinations, and LOUISA seized every opportunity to foster the boy's enthusiasm whenever he went near her HEINTZMAN.
When the boy was eight years old ALFRED, LOUISA's husband, purchased a gift for her; a set of oil paints.
The boy had already begun to paint, thanks to the foresight of his mother.
LOUISA and her grandson began painting together during the summer months. Daily, the boy would race his bicycle across many laneways with paints tackled to the frame of his bike in order to reach LOUISA and to 'help' her learn to paint.
More often than not, LOUISA prepared 'salmon sandwiches' for lunch. The boy always looked forward to seeing her more than he wished to be with friends of his own age.
LOUISA and her grandson spent countless hours together; painting, playing the piano and worshipping each other.
She gave to the boy all of the talents which he holds today.
LOUISA LEES NEWMAN died in 1965.
She was my grandmother.
I remember her with enormous affection.

SALLY'S POND #3 'BRIAN'

SALLY'S POND #3
24 X 20
Oil on canvas
I mentioned my canoe trip with BRIAN in relation to an earlier painting.
My friends listen when I speak.
I often speak nonsense, but I always demand an ear.
While enjoying the beauty of his pond, BRIAN was kind enough to stop paddling and listen as I rambled on from the rear of his canoe...

KNOWLTON CEMETARY: STEPHEN CARON, 2009

"...in solitude, where we are least alone."
(Lord Byron)

KNOWLTON CEMETARY: August 2009

11 X 14

Oil on canvas

My visit to a sunlit place where peace reigns sovereign. As I grow older, I wonder at the significance of my short 'strut' upon this planet.

I attempt to paint the light which defines our lives...

This work is for sale: $790

YOUR HUMBLE PAINTER...

I am the 'Star' of my own show...
The face you see is neither a prince nor a pauper.
It is the face of a man who, to the best of his ability, strives to produce something of value as dusk approaches his horizon.
I play poker, as this particular 'uniform' suggests. I like to calculate 'odds' and then make decisions. I am a 'retired' BLACKJACK player. I used to count cards. This endeavour in Montreal was soon "nipped in the bud" as the Casino planted it's yellow card in the shoe... about 2 decks closer to middle.
I love to cook.
NASCAR auto racing intrigues me. I enjoy the speed and precision involved in this sport.
Tennis excites me. I appreciate individual sports, where one man or woman has talent and is brave enough to go 'all-out' before a world-wide audience.
I LOVE the arts. Classical music inspires me; BACH, BEETHOVEN, LISZT and so many other great composers. Great music stimulates a spiritual core that lingers above the tip of my spine. CHOPIN! Have I mentioned FREDERIC?
As I grow older, I find that simple things give me enormous pleasure. I might be standing in line at the 'check-out' counter... and when a sweet face smiles in my direction, I feel thankful.
I am somewhat of a philosopher. I have few answers and MANY questions. I somehow refuse to believe that my life is meaningless, yet (at the same time) I ponder in awe the extent and depth of the universe.
I recognize that my life is a grain of sand upon a VERY large beach.
When all of these things are packed into a box and sent to the attic, one thing remains; one thing that I hope will define my petty existance upon this planet. I hope to leave a thin trace of my presence after I have taken flight.
I PAINT!
I revel in a small world where there is a brush in my hand, some color upon my palette; and when a white field begs to be filled.
THANK-YOU for viewing my art.

HOMAGE TO FREDERIC...

When I was younger, FREDERIC CHOPIN was my god. He is still my favorite composer. I played (poorly) many of his piano works. Today as I paint, his Ballades, Scherzos, Nocturnes and Waltzes are loud and crisp in my background.
The most fabulous composer of the ROMANTIC era, Monsieur FREDERIC embodies the passion of our combined spiritual quest; the wistful, nostalgic yearnings of our innermost thoughts.
CHOPIN mesmerized his audiences.
Described by the harshest critics of his time as being pallid, frail and of having a "sick-room talent"; and while Polish-born FREDERIC performed in the most intimate interiors of elite Paris Salons during the formative years of the nineteenth century, his passages reek of the SPIRITUAL tremors in our dreams and of the magnificent glory of nature itself.
CHOPIN opened one of history's doors.
IMPRESSIONIST painters walked through it and took their seats.
Born in Warsaw in 1810, our master poet of the keyboard died in Paris in 1849. We can only wonder at the superb body of work we have been denied by his untimely death.

SALLY'S POND #2: STEPHEN CARON, October 2009

12 X 10
Oil on Canvas
This is a small painting which depicts my good friend BRIAN's old cottage at SALLY's POND, near Knowlton Village in the Province of Quebec.
I refer to it as BRIAN's 'old' cottage, since this picturesque dwelling has been torn down. 'Mr Brian' has rebuilt. The result is a spectacular new country home.
I believe the 'old' dwelling should be remembered.
Many of Brian's friends (including your humble painter) savored its rustic charm as it sat perched above SALLY's POND for many years...

STILL LIFE: 'THE ARTS': A. SCENDY

STILL LIFE: 24 X 30 1/2 inches

This large, classical Still Life painting has been in my collection for approximately 25 years. I purchased it from an Antiques Dealer in the Montreal area during a period in my life when I could ill afford to buy such quality art. I felt there was little choice, however, and I had to own it. It is time to make room, since my walls cannot accomodate all of the paintings that I wish to display and enjoy. It is time for change, so this work is FOR SALE.
I cannot provide details concerning the artist, SCENDY. My educated guess is that the work dates from circa 1920 or earlier.
This is the work of a MASTER.
Beginning with composition, elements of the painting are interdependant. The components fit together to form a complex, harmonious whole.
The colors are rich and vibrant. Elegant reds are lifted by subdued, receding greens.
Realism has been built from painstaking attention to detail and an elevated classical sensibility.
Witness the execution of the lace.
This painting might be entitled 'THE ARTS'.
Everyone will recognize the elements in this work; the books, a violin, the illustration in a book. Taken together (a symphony), they portray our greatest artistic endeavours: MUSIC, LITERATURE and PAINTING.
This work is for sale: $2,500

WE STRUT A FEW MOMENTS...

We strut across this planet for a short while...
and we leave a mark.
We offer our impressions because we believe that we have something to share.
I walk and I paint in our present time.
A few colors cast upon canvas shall endure beyond my counted days.
My gift is what I see and feel...
as I strut a few short steps upon this earth.
(Thank you for a borrowed word, Mr. Shakespeare.)

VIEWERS OF MY ART...

Dear readers;

I've been told that, in person, I appear somewhat menacing, rather inapproachable...
I assure you that I am built of only the softest, most pliable materials.
I've walked proud and confident at times, and I've sat cross-legged in wonder on other occasions. My bundle of flesh and bones has rested upon our planet for 57 years..
I am resilient, but I wonder if others enjoy my work, if they have questions or suggestions.
I paint to please myself; but of more importance, I paint to please others.
It's important to me that I understand what you think!
Please leave comments or questions concerning any of the paintings featured. (Under each post, there is a small space marked '0 comments'. You need only click on this, then enter your question or comment.)
I can be contacted by email at caron.stephen@videotron.ca
THANK YOU for your interest!
And now I'm off to sign the SALLY'S POND painting, to frame it; and then to begin another artistic voyage!
Your humble Painter,
STEPHEN CARON

SALLY'S POND, WEST BOLTON: AUGUST, 2009: STEPHEN CARON

This painting is my latest (as yet unsigned and unframed).
Oil on Stretched Canvas
20 X 16
LANDSCAPES capture my imagination. I have always loved the pastoral works of REMBRANDT, CONSTABLE and others.
I am a city boy, but the countryside excites me. Skies are ethereal. Trees live and breathe and have personalities. Trees speak to us from the past. Some are confident, self-assured. They dance. Others turn away in protest.
I am a COLORIST.
I am a COLORIST in the sense that I would never attempt to astound you with shocking tones or 'showmanship'. I am a COLORIST in the sense that I portray nature, people and things using sometimes 'unlikely' COLORS... to invoke a spiritual response to our world, our sense of 'being there'. This is a personal endeavour in which photography can never compete.
This is my painting of the BRIDGE AT SALLY'S POND in West Bolton, Quebec.
It's the result of a short canoe trip which I enjoyed in early August 2009 with one of my finest friends, BRIAN, a resident at 'the Pond'.
I pretend to be neither a master nor a prince, but I cannot (as yet) do better...
Please see my next (latest) post for details.
This painting will be for sale, signed and well framed at $1,490.

LES FLEURS DU VILLAGE: STEPHEN CARON

LES FLEURS DU VILLAGE (THE VILLAGE FLOWERS)
ST-LAMBERT: August, 2009
14 x 11
Oil on Stretched Canvas
"Le Marche aux Fleurs du Village" takes its place among a row of merchants in downtown St-Lambert on the South Shore of Montreal. St-Lambert retains much of the character and charm of bygone days.
Early afternoon sunlight bathing the storefront in light drew me to capture the 'moment'. I was particularly attracted by the exciting reds, blues and violets... as well as the sharp contrasts between highlights and shadows.
The lady entering the picture from the left helps to invite us into the scene. It seems to me that she is anxious to begin her investigation of the merchandise...

THE TOOLS OF MY TRADE...

Whether or not my work pleases you, I wish to assure potential patrons that I use only the FINEST quality materials in all of my paintings...

Starting with the ground, all of my works are presented in oils upon stretched canvas unless otherwise specified. I either stretch the canvas myself or purchase highest quality (acid free) pre-stretched material.

As for my brushes, I spend a small fortune... although these are of less importance to you the viewer. (Paint could be applied with a wooden spatula and, in the hands of a master, the result would be spectacular.)

I use FAT OVER LEAN techinique. The underpainting is completed using a thinner mixture than the finishing (external) layers. Oil paint is flexible. Imagine applying a thin layer of paint over an elastic band and then stretching the elastic band! The paint would CRACK, I believe! Any artist who does not understand this principle cannot create works that will ENDURE...
My paints are of the HIGHEST QUALITY. I favor the REMBRANDT series, manufactured by TALENS; although I also use oils created by HOLBEIN and a few other manufacturers. All are EXTRA FINE in quality.
Finally, a painting must be protected in order to endure. Although oil paintings may be "dry to the touch" after several days, a work must be allowed to dry thoroughly for at least six months before a protective veneer can be applied. All of my works are varnished according to this principle, which assures stability and LONGEVITY. My paintings will greatly outlast the life expectancy of your humble painter!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATRONAGE AND FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY ART!

JUNE 24, 2009: St Jean Baptiste: Stephen Caron

Oil on canvas
16 X 20
This painting was inspired by the colors and atmosphere at noon during a major day of celebration in Montreal. The occasion is 'FETE ST. JEAN', a popular holiday in the Province of Quebec. The setting is Ste. Catherine St. East, widely known as the 'Gay Village'.
The population of that sector is known to 'sleep late'... and so the street scene is fairly tranquil, with some signs of growing activity.

IN PROGRESS: 'ROSS'

Oil on Canvas: 14 X 12
Another work which is 'under construction'.
My subject 'Ross' has been a loyal friend for more than 30 years. He is a sailor and VIP at the Ile Perrot Yacht Club, a locale which has provided me with some fantastic subject matter for other paintings.
There remain several areas to articulate and the 'sparkle' is not yet present; but I will soon complete this work and (hopefully) pay due respect to a sunny afternoon at the yacht club and my highly respected friend.

ILE PERROT YACHT CLUB, EARLY MORNING #2

OIL ON CANVAS: 12 x 10 (Stephen Caron)
This painting began during the late summer of 2008. It was finished March, 2009.
ILE PERROT YACHT CLUB on the western tip of the island of Montreal offers everything a landscape painter might desire to portray during our northern summer months: excellent contrast between lights and shadows, dazzling morning reflections and wonderful subject matter (the yachts).

THE 'PATH' IN MY PAINTINGS...

The PATH in my landscapes reminds us of our journey.
It is a road, a sidewalk, a bicycle path...
We stand along the way.
We advance toward a distant point, where all things vanish.
I paint the things along our journey; quiet things, things which live and breathe...
as we approach the horizon.

TOMATO FARMER, ATWATER MARKET

Oil on canvas: 10 X 8 (Stephen Caron)
This small painting was inspired by my visit to ATWATER MARKET one morning during the late summer of 2008. It was finished in March, 2009. As always, I strove to capture the light and time of day; as well as the stoic gaze of one our farmers who offers the results of his labor...

MORE OF "THE APPLE" IN PROGRESS (DETAIL)

The man's face is now just taking form. (He still has 6 fingers. I cut it down from 7, but I won't show them yet.)
There will be much more to come...
This is a large work, 4 feet X 3 feet. I'm used to working a much smaller format, but I enjoy using a large brush (for some things) and being more liberal with the application of paint.

VIEW FROM LAKESHORE: STEPHEN CARON, 1993
Oil on Canvas, 10" X 12"
This is another plein-air painting which I completed 'on the spot' on the West Island of Montreal some 15 years ago. On this occasion, I painted alone... 'sans' my friend, J-P. I remember a fine, sunny afternoon; people basking in the sun, sailboats on the distant water and everything being just as it should be during our Montreal summer.
THIS PAINTING IS SOLD.

A WORK IN PROGRESS (DETAIL): "THE APPLE"

A WORK IN PROGRESS (DETAIL): "THE APPLE"
This is a large commissioned painting, 4' X 3', which will hang on a very high wall. It depicts an elderly couple on a balcony. The woman drops an apple over the railing toward the viewers below.
The subject matter intrigues me. I imagined it while considering that the painting will hang far above the viewer. I was inspired by one of the Italian Baroque masters who adorned the lofty interior dome of a church with a very charming 'trompe l'oeil' effect... cherubs who peer down from their ledges while firing arrows and dropping apples onto the visitors below.
I've been working on this painting 'on and off' for several months. I am in the process of articulating many of the details and finalizing the color scheme. Then I will enter the 'home stretch', with completion in sight...

STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE: STEPHEN CARON: 1993

STE. ANNE DE BELLEVUE: STEPHEN CARON: 1993
Oil on Canvas, 9" X 11"
This is another work which was completed on site several years ago, during one of many excursions with my friend, Jean-Paul. (He is mentioned during an earlier post.)
It depicts a scene at the locks in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, a lively community on the western tip of the island of Montreal
We began painting in mid morning, when people were slow and sparse. Around noon a few onlookers developed into a thick flock, full of questions and comments. J-P quit his painting and began holding court with several of the more attractive members of our entourage. It was always pleasant. I remember finishing the painting later the same day once I had arrived downtown and closed my door upon the outer world.
This small work is spontaneous. It caricatures people within the afternoon setting.
It has a certain charm, I believe...
The work is for sale: $395

VILLAGE SCENE: A. BANNET; date unknown

VILLAGE SCENE: A. BANNET; date unknown
Oil on Canvas, 15" X 23
This painting has been in my possession for the past 25 years. I have not been able to determine the artist's origins. I believe he was British, given the style of the work and the subject matter. It reeks of English countryside... The date is also unknown to me, though I believe it to have originated during the 1920's or 30's (an educated guess).
The painting is exquisite. Attention to detail, the rich colors and the successful capture of LIGHT are captivating.
Current framing is inadequate, given the quality of the painting.
The work is for sale: $2,400

WELCOME TO MY ART...

WELCOME TO MY GALLERY AND THOUGHTS FOR ART LOVERS.
My interests revolve primarily around the arts. Recently retired from an unrelated field, I can now devote myself to my first love... PAINTING. I possess a diploma in APPLIED ART and earned a university degree in FINE ART and ART HISTORY (Montreal).
I have painted all my life since the age of 5 when my mother purchased my first set of oil paints. I studied classical piano from an early age but, suffering from EXTREME bouts of stage-fright as I grew older, I developed an acceptance of the fact that my talent is best 'performed' with paint... so that the results can be displayed without stress to potential 'victims'... as a completed canvas upon the wall.
During my university years I held dear many of the 'old masters', with artists such as REMBRANDT, VERMEER, INGRES, GERICAULT and DELACROIX holding me fast within their grip.
During my later years I developed a devotion to the IMPRESSIONISTS. Like most artists after the late 19th century I understood that with the development of photography, painters needed to re-establish their goals BEYOND the representation of outward appearances, a pursuit in which the new medium of photography rendered the reproduction of our 'outer' world obsolete!
Like the IMPRESSIONISTS, I believe that the painter's task is to portray that which is INVISIBLE and INTANGIBLE... the SPIRITUAL qualities of LIGHT and ATMOSPHERE, things which cannot be touched or photographed, the sense of BEING in a specific place at a specific time in conditions which are specific to THE MOMENT... the IMPRESSION of being ALIVE within a certain space and time.
I welcome all comments regarding my work and the other painters who are displayed. Please feel free to email me for more information.
Thank you for visiting.

SOME THOUGHTS ON 'LINE'...

There is no 'LINE'

'LINE' is a man-made concept.

'LINES' do not exist.

There are only borders where LIGHT distinguishes one object from another, and while these are called 'lines', the concept is purely hypothetical.

A 'STRAIGHT LINE' does not exist, except under man-made circumstances.

"I, STEPHEN CARON, cannot draw a straight line..."

STEPHEN CARON, NOVEMBER, 2008

TERREBONNE: STEPHEN CARON, 1993

TERREBONNE: STEPHEN CARON, 1993.

Oil on Canvas: 16" X 20"

This is a 'Plein-air' painting created in 1993 during one of my afternoon excursions with a painter friend, Jean-Paul. Once in Terrebonne, I remember setting up our easels and beginning to dabble our paint; drinking wine as we told each other ridiculous stories...
Loud passers-by were oblivious to the fact that J-P and I were not the real focus of attention... THEY were!
Jean-Paul painted faster than I did, and once he believed he had finished his painting, he was more than content to sit back and comment to me regarding the dress and demeanor of each of our 'fans'.
This work is EXTREMELY spontaneous. There are broad 'W's' and zigzags poked at the canvas, sweeping downstrokes and horizontal wipes; and colors that don't make any real sense in terms of our true environment.
I believe the painting has merit; It's my recollection of an afternoon in Terrebonne with J-P.
The work is for sale. $750

ST. LAMBERT: STEPHEN CARON, 2008

ST. LAMBERT: STEPHEN CARON, 2008.

Oil on Canvas, 16" X 20"

St. Lambert on the south shore facing Montreal is an urbane, thriving and picturesque community. In the center of town, there is a small park, which inspired this painting. The colors and brushstrokes are loose. I tried to capture (as always) a sense of immediacy, tranquility; the quality of morning light which easily escapes our hurried experiences.

The work is for sale: $425

AUTUMN LANDSCAPE: GORDON GEZA MARICH, date unknown.

AUTUMN LANDSCAPE: GORDON GEZA MARICH, date unknown.
Oil on Canvas, 20" X 23"
GORDON GEZA MARICH was born in Hungary in 1913. He studied art in BUDAPEST, emmigrating to Canada in 1957. It is generally acknowledged that his death occured in 1975, although some conflicting reports indicate that he died in 1985.
Widely collected, MARICH painted many different subjects, including depictions of downtown Montreal, Quebec. His paintings hang in the NATIONAL ART MUSEUM in BUDAPEST, in galleries in OTTAWA and TORONTO, and in private collections world-wide. His later works evolved toward abstraction, including the broad use of a palette knife.
The work is immaculate and well framed. It is more expressive, impressionistic than 'abstract'. I believe it was painted during the 1960's, and this is based upon testimony regarding purchase from the original owner. The colors are bold and harmonic, as is the application of paint. It is a superb work.
The work is for sale: $1,400

THOUGHTS ABOUT COLOR...

For the painter, colors are his notes. For the musician, notes are his colors.
There are thousands of colors... and a multitude of notes.
Any one of us might open a tube of red paint, mix it with white... then apply 'pink' to our chosen surface.
Any one of us can sit at the piano and depress the keys, several at once or in sequence, either loudly or softly.
But to achieve harmony, the experience of completion which we all seek, a master is required to organize his tools...
Beethoven painted his triumphant masterpieces with notes; while Rembrandt composed our glorious symphonies in color.
That is what we admire. That is what we seek.

ILE PERROT YACHT CLUB, EARLY MORNING: STEPHEN CARON, 2008.
Oil on Canvas, 20" X 16"
This is a recent work, depicting 'early morning' at the 'Ile Perrot Yacht Club' on the western tip of the island of Montreal. My intent was that warm colors and subtle transitions should convey the light and tranquility of an early summer morning by the water, when sunlight causes our world to sparkle...
